BBC iPlayer widget now available for Nokia N-Series mobiles
7th October 2008
Probably in reaction to quite a few people complaining about the iPlayer being made available on the Nokia N96 — which very few people own because it was only released a few weeks ago — whilst existing handsets with a large user-base like the Nokia N95 have so far been ignored, the BBC has released a BBC iPlayer widget that can be downloaded and installed on Nokia N95 and N78 handsets.
In addition, someone has posted workaround instructions to make the widget available on other Nokia N-Series phones, which consists of unzipping the files in the widget and simply adding the model number of the N-Series handset to a text file prior to installing the widget. One question to ask about this is why didn't the BBC add the model numbers of other suitable N-Series handsets rather than requiring people to perform this workaround?
Unfortunately, the widget still limits access to the iPlayer via Wi-Fi, whereas the iPlayer on the N96 is accessible via 3G as well.
Below are screenshots of the iPlayer widget on the Nokia N95.
